Our Approach
What is "Mahou Josei in the Real World"?
Back in 2008-2009, I started a blog called "Mahou Josei and the Adaptation to a Nerdy Life". It contained reviews of anime, manga, comics, and video games, as well as commentary about current relevant news stories, convention coverage, and webcomics. It was meant to be kept apart from my other blog, which after awhile, I renamed "Mahou Josei in the Real World" and which I used to discuss things personal to me as well as commentary on current news.
While this website still leans mostly toward the former, my hobbies and nerdier interests are inextricably linked to who I am. They have shaped me in tandem with my real life experiences. So I thought this title would leave me space for both.
When I started the former blog, I was just leaving college and trying to shed or at least put aside those interests, finding them unbecoming of an adult and not seeing them in many of my colleagues. So I established the blog as a way of keeping up with the things that had entranced me for so long and being able to share my thoughts and opinions.
If the friendships and relationships I've established in the last several years have taught me anything, it's that adulthood isn't about shedding who you are. It's about taking responsibility for yourself and your family. And just as with high school, the people that would have you shed some interest or hobby you have to fit in with them probably have little intention of sticking around anyway. Grow, change, respect the world around you, and be who you are, even if who you are changes over time.
